Who we are
A small association, recently founded, with a specific idea about what is missing here.
What we are for
We work with the organisations that build and regulate AI systems, on the research and the rules that decide how those systems turn out. Those systems will shape what happens to a great many people who never get a vote on them. That is the whole reason this association exists, and it is why the work needs doing from here as well as from the places that already have it.
What we work on
Three strands, in ascending order of how long they take. Technical research on evaluating and overseeing frontier systems. Governance work on implementing the AI Act in a member state that is still designating its authorities, and on what the rules after it should say. And field-building: there is no AI safety community in Latvia, and somebody has to start one.

The organisation
Biedrība "Alignment" is a biedrība, a registered association under Latvian law, founded in 2025, registered at PLACEHOLDER iela 1, Rīga LV-1050. Our statutes set out the purpose and how decisions get made. We publish them because an organisation asking to be trusted with grant money should be readable.
Why a shoggoth?
The shoggoth in a smiley mask is the field’s own drawing of the distance between what a model was trained to show you and whatever it learned underneath. It is the alignment problem, illustrated, and it was drawn by the people who work on it.
That distance is not a curiosity. These systems are already handed decisions about who gets a loan, a visa, a diagnosis, and in time about a good deal more than that, while the people deploying them cannot say what the systems actually learned. Closing that gap is the work. We took the shoggoth as a logo because we would rather name the problem than decorate around it.
